Do your children learn about Hanukkah and do Hanukkah related activities at school?

Dec 17, 2008 by Ultraviolet30 | Posted in Grade-Schooler

My 7 year old brings home worksheets and coloring pages that teach about the menorah and the dreidel. They made paper dreidels and spun them. I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with her learning about the worlds religions. I think its great. But I think its biased. Why are there NO lessons about Buddhism, Christianity or Hinduism?

So, my question is "What do your children learn about at public school regarding the world's religions?"

Kids tend to often learn about Hanukkah in school, because it's a misguided attempt to be 'inclusive.' "If we teach about Hanukkah/sing "The Dreydle Song" then it's ok to also bring in Santa Claus and have Christmas decorations/parties. Of course the fact than Hanukkah is a very minor holiday is beside the point. (I've never known of a school to teach about Passover, or the high holy days.) I'm going to guess that your 7 year has actually not learned anything about Judaism -- just some basics about this one holiday. ("They eat potato pancakes, light candles, get presents, and play a game with a top. It's what Jews celebrate instead of Christmas.")

A few years ago, Ramadan fell in late December. And all the schools were suddenly teaching about Ramadan too. The next year, the holiday moved up a couple of weeks ... and no mention.

Actual courses about religion are usually taught in conjunction with history classes. So, until your child begins studying world history, he probably won't learn anything about Buddhism or Hinduism. [It's assumed that he knows about Christianity. My high school aged daughter came home last year asking me what the Trinity was ... her world cultures textbooks assumed that all the students already about it. (She's Jewish, and so only has minimal 'cultural' knowlege about Christianity.)

6 Ways to Stop Sibling Fighting

What about when they say "It's not fair!"

"Yeah, well, I have news for you: Life is not fair, so suck it UP! If it were, our private chef would make you breakfast and the driver will lead to school and I'd still be asleep instead of having this conversation. AGAIN! "

No, I did not say it to my twin daughters this morning, but I thought so hard that they may have heard. That women found so unacceptable is that after having wrestled for 20 minutes about who got to wear a sweatshirt with pink fairy on it, I told them that none of them could. We then discussed how frustrating is that we can not always get what we want, and I explained the reasoning behind my decision entirely fair. I knew they were not happy, I told them, but little magic, drawing a fairy sweatshirts identical to my late (gross faces followed), it was the best I could do in two minutes we had before we had to leave. However, they harrumphed and stomped around and insisted that I committed a grave injustice against them and any children everywhere. This, before I had my coffee. But at least we argue with each other.

It was a welcome respite, as Sasha and Vivian, who is 6, have recently found the following list (unfair partial): This class of Vivian went to the museum, and Sasha did not, this class must eat Sasha marshmallows, they used to make geometric 3-D with toothpicks, while Vivian class does not do this activity, this tooth Viv fell first, even though Sacha was born 90 seconds before and Vivian it is the "older" and that Sasha's glasses are purple and not "boring old gold," as Vivian, Sasha "Got to Have" alone time with mom when she stayed home from school in vomiting trash bin Hello Kitty, which lies on the bed Mom Viv to kiss her good night, but only kissed Bridget gets a standing position (Sasha sleeps on the top bunk, which is difficult for me to climb ).In passing, it is sometimes unfair to Vivian as Bridget gets up. It makes me mad....

Hanukkah, like Purim, is one of what I thought of as a child as “the happy holidays”: a rare occasion on which the constantly embattled Hebrews were pleasantly surprised to not be horribly massacred. (Passover, with its long list of culinary and more »
