What kind of Hanukkah food is there besides latkas and doughnuts?

Dec 12, 2007 by abcw | Posted in Hanukkah

I'm doing this project on Hanukkah (Go figure!) And I need to know about other foods consumed outside latkes and jelly donuts. I tried searching the Internet, but the only things that have been raised have been, guess what, latkes and donuts!

PS If you have pictures that would really help!
= Pancakes latkes potato
I also know about Gelt, or chocolate coins.

What is the best Bakery quality flour to use for Jelly Doughnuts (Sufganiyot)?

Dec 24, 2008 by Joseph M | Posted in Other - Food & Drink

I need to buy flour for making Hanukkah Jelly Doughnuts and I don't know which would be best and most professional as to the quality and taste. Would any professionals or bakers be able to give me advice? Someone recommended Snowflake All Purpose flour. Any other recommendations?

Thanks in Advance
bleached or unbleached all purpose flour?

I am a former chef from Canada and all purpose flour is better, a harder bread flour will make them to chewy, and with frying them for Hanukkah they are nicer with a softer texture, just let them cool before putting the jelly inside.

All Purpose Flour is the best quality. Other than that, the brand is up to you.

How to grow a garden full of girlfriends

I am blessed with an array of fabulous girlfriends. How am I so lucky? I think the planets aligned, one thing led to another, I was the right place at the right time, synchronicity, Kismet,. . . all these things. I do not take full credit for all these tangles of peers, however I do take full responsibiltiy to feed them.

The meadow of girlfriends that I have now, it's easy to appreciate because I did no such thing as a young person. Growing up I had a friend, as the plant Aloe rugged and reliable follow you to the dorm room efficiency condo, I had Susan.Susan is my most faithful and life long friend. Since we were thrown together in 5th year at Forest Edge Elementary School, Susan was there for me. Susan was from the mysterious bayous of Louisiana and the face had freckles, Slow-trolling and broad smile that come with our preconceived ideas of what a female should look like Huck Finn. We grew up together and thank you in spite of our geography and common off-beat ways of being. We stayed together through the ups and downs of life. No matter what the number of friends that I have progressed since my childhood, Susan will always be my best bud.

Have you ever told a young person to be themself, and they will attract people who are like them?  Well, that sounds pretty  passive, doesn’t it?  I like the “be yourself” component, but you can’t just sit down and expect people to come to you.  I didn’t grow a garden full of girlfriends by sitting in my front yard with my kids and a sign that says “Organic, Smart Ass, Well-educated, middle class teacher seeks same”.

Seek and Ye Shall Find.  Pay attention.  My girlfriend gang took root in several places.  One was the playground of our local Jewish Community Center.A group of mothers would sit and talk while our children play in the yard after daycare....
