What Candy is needed to make Halloween Creature Cupcakes?
Aug 17, 2009 by Mayo7 | Posted in Cooking & Recipes
I am having a Halloween party and we will be making creature cupcakes for dessert. Creature Cupcakes are just cupcakes with icing and maybe some little cute Halloween type faces on them. I was just wondering what types of candy I could use for the face features such as eyes noses and mouths? Thanks for the help!
After many experiences of making cupcakes with candy on them, i have learned a few things.
The most important of those things is that it is important to not go crazy on the icing; a thin layer will suffice, because the candy you are putting on top will have more than enough sugar.
Also, i recommend putting green food colouring in your cupcake batter, because it will add a nice ghoulish effect to them. Also, if you add chocolate chips to the green batter, it will add an even nicer effect.
Another thing that is important is the fact that when people put big candies on the cupcakes, like swedish berries, or fuzzy peaches, THEY FALL OFF! I assume you will be decorating the cupcakes prior to the party, so you should really factor that in.
The best candies to choose would probably be candy corn (put sideways, of course, to make jack-o-lantern eyes, Gummy worms, with the flat part on the cupcake, and life saver gummies.
However, there is an intriguing idea; to let your party guests decorate their own cupcakes ( i wasn't sure if this was what you meant when you said "and we will be making creature cupcakes for dessert"). I recommend this only if you are having a party with children. This way, there is no argument over who gets what design and what cupcake, and you won't have to worry about storing them without wrecking your freshly iced & decorated cupcakes.
Lastly, if you don't care how the candy sticks to the cupcake, i recommend you use these:
skittles
M&Ms
Starburst
Smarties
Candy corn
Fuzzy Peaches
Cherry blasters
Swedish berries
popcorn (not my cup of tea, but many people like that combination of sweet and savory)
foil wrapped chocolates
Edible silver chocolate balls
and lastly, my personal favourite:
at various candy stores, you can find the "fear factor" candy line. These include various edible gummies and chocolate in the VERY REALISTIC shapes and colour of maggots, worms, leeches, e.t.c.
Always fun for a laugh ;)
Also, i am not sure if they have these around you, but the best place to buy all these candies is bulk barn (more info and possible coupons at bulk barn's website go to my source for this article)
Anyway, i hope my answer helps you :)

Field guide for the war on goody-goodies
Author Tom Nardone begins: "Think of Halloween as a battlefield between the cool people (us) and the goody goodies (them). We won trick-or-treating, alcohol, pumpkins and haunted houses, but ... the goody-goodies will always be the best and placemats and napkins will probably never admit defeat when it comes to making cupcakes. "Sigh. I'll join your army, Tom.
