whats the difference between thanksgiving and christmas cactus?

Dec 03, 2006 by Fall Jumprun | Posted in Garden & Landscape

i thought i had christmas cactus but someone told me it was really thanksgiving cactus. how do they know it was thanksgiving when it says on the tag that its christmas cactus?

Easter Cactus (Rhipsalidopsis Gaertneri) has no teeth on the leaves. They also got bristles that are usually on the end of the leaves or at certain spots along the sides of the leaves.

Thanksgiving Cactus (Zygocactus Truncata) has sharp teeth on the leaves.

Christmas Cactus (Zygocactus Bridgesii) has 'rounded' teeth on the leaves.

When it comes to the names, it can get quite confusing. For example, 'Rhipsalidopsis Gaertneri' can also be under 'Hatiora Gaertneri'.

Also, I don't know when the change happened but all are also listed as 'Schlumbergera'. For example, 'Schlumbergera Gaertneri', 'Schlumbergera Truncata', and 'Schlumbergera Bridgesii'.

Also, another name you'll see is 'Schlumbergera x buckleyi' for the 'true' christmas cactus.

A lot of people mistake Thanksgiving Cactus as Christmas Cactus because they're usually forced into bloom around Christmas time and calling them "Christmas Cactus" is better than "Thanksgiving Cactus".

Another way of knowing if you have Thanksgiving Cactus is if your bloom pushes upward. Christmas Cactus blooms don't bend upwards. They just hang down.

Easter Cactus blooms are much different than that of Thanksgiving Cactus and Christmas Cactus.

Here is a link that has incredible information as well as very informative images on how to identify what holiday cactus you have:

Christmas Cactus

Gardening expert John R. King, Jr., tells us all about Christmas cactus in this edition of GARDENING IN POLK.

Haberdi and Happenibersari

Last Saturday was the anniversary of Mike, who incidentally was our wedding anniversary as well. In retrospect, Mike did a very good decision in choosing our anniversary on the occasion of his birthday. Many people often forget birthdays, anniversaries, but nah !!!... That's what everyone looks forward to every year. Birthdays are the only time the celebrants are allowed to be crazy, lazy gag and intimidate friends into giving whims, and still get away.

Mike and I really had no plans for the weekend. And I was not going to have any celebration, given that I knew the weather would not cooperate.Besides, we were on a budget, having spent so much this summer.

Several years ago, I took the habit of surprising parents with gifts at Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries or special events. Instead, I would ask them what they need - not what they want, because it was always more expensive. If I could afford it, this would be my gift. If not, then I'll get another report to share the cost with me. True, but practical. And if all else fails, money is the best option. I knew Mike wanted many things, but it did not really need anything as far as I know.

I was already in the computer chatting in FB, when Mike woke up that Saturday morning. I got my birthday card from my bag and carried to his bed, kissed him and welcomed. With eyes narrowed, he looked at the white envelope and said: "The money is in him ?"... I smiled, but when he felt a little bump in the envelope, the beam on his face an accompanying statement said: "I think there is money in it, it's a bit thick.

He pulled the card envelops you, and when he opened the first note of the song must have startled him and he immediately issued the card. "There is no money ..." he shouted.
"Of course, there is no" what do you expect me sugar mama! " I said....
