Why are carnival floats called floats?

Dec 18, 2006 by BARRYONEOFF | Posted in Trivia

Around the world in all the carnivals, the vehicles used to perform various points are always called "floaters". Why were all the water carnivals supported once?

The noun meaning "a platform on wheels used for displays in parades, etc." is from 1888, probably from earlier sense of "flat-bottomed boat" (1557).

because when decorated, you do not see the wheels or the mechanics of how the thing moves so they look like they were floating in the street ...

I am entering a carnival float in to a local parade?

Apr 13, 2008 by THE MIGHTY RA | Posted in Other - Society & Culture

the theme is hammer house of horror, I'd be very grateful if you could give me your ideas for themes, costumes etc? So guys what do you think?

Build a mini replica of the house on the hill from Psycho in the center of the float.

The around the float, have the top ten bad guys from horror films. Freddie, Jason, Michael, Texas Chainsaw Massacre guy, etc. Add the white elongated face mask from the Scream movies. Also add Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolf-man and a Mummy. You can get to Ten easy. And, you'll have NO problem getting ten buddies to dress up, each as the villain of their choice.

If you really want some fun, add to the ten horror villains a guy in a suit wearing and a George Bush mask (or a Hilary mask depending on which side you want to satire). That would be hilarious.

If you live near Cleveland, I'll help you build the Psycho house. This sounds fun!!

Enjoy.
